What Is Surf Coaching and How Can It Improve Your Surfing?

If you are completely new to surfing, or you have already caught a few waves and want to improve, surf coaching is one of the best ways to build your skills, confidence, and understanding of the ocean.

At Maktub Maroc, our surf coaching in Morocco is designed for complete beginners as well as intermediate surfers who want more guidance with paddling, positioning, wave selection, take-off, balance, and technique.

More importantly, we want you to enjoy the process. Surfing is not only about standing on a board. It is about learning how the ocean works, understanding yourself in the water, progressing step by step, and having a lot of fun along the way.

What Does Surf Coaching Mean?

Surf coaching means you are not left to figure everything out alone.

Each day, we choose the best surf spot according to the conditions, tides, and your surfing level. Our experienced local surf instructors are in the water with you to guide you, encourage you, correct your technique, and help you understand what is happening around you.

At the beginning of your stay, we look at your current level and talk about your personal goals. If you have surfed before, you may want to improve your paddling, catch more green waves, work on your take-off, improve your positioning, or become more confident in the line-up. We can then focus your coaching around those goals throughout the week.

Before entering the water, we start on the beach with surf theory. We explain board positioning, paddling technique, different ways to pop up, balance, wave selection, ocean safety, surf etiquette, and the basic rules of positioning in the water.

We also warm up properly with some cardio, joint mobility, and stretching. We like to keep this part relaxed and fun, and sometimes everyone contributes a warm-up exercise.

Surf Coaching for Beginners

For complete beginners, we normally start in smaller broken waves, known as white water or white wash.

Here, you can concentrate on the fundamentals without worrying too much about reading unbroken waves yet. Your instructor helps you position the board correctly, gives you a push when needed, and guides you through your paddling, pop-up, balance, and body position.

The goal is to give you a strong foundation from your first days of surfing.

As you become more comfortable, we gradually help you become more independent.

Surf Coaching for Intermediate Surfers

If you are already comfortable in the white water and ready to catch unbroken green waves, we take the coaching further.

You will begin working more on paddling strength, positioning in the line-up, timing, choosing the right wave, take-off technique, and understanding how waves develop.

When we have surfers of different levels, we organize the groups accordingly so you receive coaching suitable for your ability.

Your instructor stays close to you in the water, giving immediate feedback after your waves and helping you understand what worked and what you can change on the next one.

And yes, we also celebrate the good ones.

Surfing can sometimes be frustrating, so having someone there to encourage you, laugh with you, and remind you that progress takes time makes a big difference.

Personal Feedback and Video Analysis

Surf coaching is not only about what happens during the lesson.

Throughout the week, we talk with you about your progress and the areas you can improve. After a few days, when possible, we also review videos of your surfing together.

Watching yourself surf is one of the best ways to understand your technique.

We can look at your paddling, body position, pop-up, balance, timing, and the way you approach the wave. We discuss what you can work on during the next sessions, while also appreciating the waves you surfed really well.

Your goals may also change throughout the week as your confidence grows, so the coaching develops together with you.

Why Ongoing Surf Coaching Works Better Than One Lesson

A single surf lesson can introduce you to surfing, but several days of consistent coaching give you much more time to understand and practise what you have learned.

Instead of taking one lesson and then waiting months before surfing again, you spend several consecutive days building on the previous session.

You are surrounded by local instructors who grew up close to the ocean and understand the tides, waves, conditions, and surf spots around the Moroccan coast.

Many beginners manage to stand on their board and catch their first white-water waves within their first sessions. During a week of coaching, some also progress toward catching their first green waves.

Everyone progresses differently, and there is no pressure to reach a particular level.

What matters is creating good habits from the beginning.

For intermediate surfers, several days of coaching can help identify small technical mistakes that might otherwise take months to notice.

That is what makes a surf coaching Morocco experience so valuable: you have time to surf, practise, receive feedback, adjust, and try again.

A Typical Surf-Coaching Day at Maktub Maroc

After breakfast, we check the surf conditions and choose the best spot for your level.

We pack the boards, wetsuits, beach lunches, and everything we need before heading to the coast.

Your coached session normally starts with warm-up and theory on the beach, followed by around two hours of surfing with your instructor.

After the lesson, it is time to relax.

You can enjoy your packed beach lunch, swim, talk with the other guests, lie in the sunshine, or simply enjoy being by the ocean.

Depending on the conditions, you may also have the opportunity to take your board back into the water later and practise what you learned. Your instructor can remain nearby on the beach for safety and guidance, while you start developing more independence in the water.

And when your body tells you that you have surfed enough for the day, there is absolutely nothing wrong with staying on the beach, relaxing, or starting a beach-volleyball game instead.

Back at the Surf House

After the beach, we return to our comfortable boho-style surf house in Aourir.

You can shower, rest in your room, relax on our rooftop terrace, or hang out with the other guests.

You can also explore Aourir and experience a little of everyday Moroccan village life. There are local cafés, restaurants, shops, and plenty of places to simply sit down with a coffee or Moroccan mint tea and watch village life pass by.

Tamraght is only a short taxi ride away, while Taghazout is nearby if you want to explore its famous coastline, cafés, restaurants, and surf atmosphere.

You can also experience a traditional Moroccan hammam or book a massage.

Depending on your package, you might have an afternoon yoga session. You can also choose to add yoga during your stay when available.

In the evening, we usually gather for a home-cooked Moroccan dinner. Some nights are about conversations and laughter, some about board games, and others are simply about relaxing on the rooftop and watching the sunset.

You are always free to enjoy the evening your own way.

More Than Just Surfing

Some days, we also organize optional experiences outside our normal surf routine.

One of our favourites is a trip to Imsouane, a beautiful Moroccan surf village famous for its long right-hand wave and relaxed surf atmosphere.

You can also explore Paradise Valley or join us for a sunset sandboarding experience.

After playing in the dunes, there is nothing better than sitting together around a small fire in the sand and enjoying fresh Moroccan mint tea while the sun goes down.

Optional activities depend on your booking and availability during your stay.

What Is Included in a 7-Night Surf Coaching Package?

A typical 7-night surf coaching stay at Maktub Maroc includes seven nights in our comfortable rooms with a natural Moroccan atmosphere.

You will start your mornings with seven nourishing breakfasts and receive six packed beach lunches with sandwiches, salads, fruit, and fresh local flavours.

In the evenings, you can enjoy six home-cooked Moroccan dinners combining traditional dishes with some of our own favourites.

Your package also includes daily transport to the surf spots we choose according to the conditions.

During the week, you receive five days of approximately two-hour surf lessons with experienced surf instructors, together with five days of surfboard and wetsuit use.

This means you can focus on surfing, learning, relaxing, and enjoying Morocco while we take care of the main surf logistics.

Why Choose Surf Coaching in Morocco?

Morocco gives you the perfect combination of surfing, sunshine, nature, good food, local culture, and laid-back coastal life.

A surf coaching holiday gives you the opportunity to spend time outside, learn from local professionals, discover different surf spots, connect with like-minded people, and challenge yourself without forgetting that you are also here to enjoy your holiday.

And surfing gives you something that is difficult to explain until you experience it yourself.

It teaches you confidence, but also humility.

Some days you feel strong and everything seems to work. Other days, the ocean reminds you that you cannot control everything.

You learn when to push yourself and when to slow down.

Just as the tides change, your energy and performance can change too.

Over time, surfing can help you understand your body, your mind, and your limits a little better.

That is why we believe surfing is much more than simply standing on a wave.

It is learning, falling, laughing, trying again, progressing, and eventually experiencing that incredible feeling of riding a wave under your own feet.

Come to Morocco for the waves.

You may leave with much more.
